Our story is not the usual fairytale you hear about. We met in elementary school but we did not become friends until 7th grade. I always thought he was one of the hottest guys in school, but we were always just friends. Even throughout high school, we hung out with the same people but never dated. It happened senior year in high school. We were at a friend’s camp in Grand Isle and completely hit it off. This night was different. I couldn’t believe I was actually hanging out and flirting with Chuck Berthelot and he was actually flirting back! It took a while before we actually started dating and telling people we were boyfriend and girlfriend.

The downside of us dating was that Chuck went into the Coast Guard after high school. He went to boot camp in Cape May, New Jersey and we could not communicate except for letters. We wrote back and forth. It was the sweetest thing, like in the movies. After boot camp, he got stationed in Dauphin Island, Alabama. I was going to Southeastern Louisiana University for nursing. So if we wanted this new relationship to go somewhere, we had to work at it. People told us all the time that long distance relationships never work, but we totally proved them wrong. We saw each other every other weekend and sometimes during the week, balancing work and school schedules. We did what we had to do to make it work. We both knew that this was something special. I’d like to say I’m his better half, and he is totally mine.

We dated for 3 ½ years before he proposed. It was like any other day. We had a BBQ at his parent’s house with both our families. After dinner, he grabbed my hands and had me stand. His face was as red as can be, his hands were shaky and sweaty. “You make me the happiest person in the world and I wouldn’t want to be with anyone else.” He got down on one knee and said, “Chloe’ Rose, will you marry me?” I could not even answer. All I did was nod. I didn’t even cry at first because I was in such shock! A few minutes later it hit me that I was going to marry my best friend. The tears would not stop falling.

We got married on May 20, 2016, and it was the best day of our lives. It was absolutely amazing. The mass, the venue, the decorations, the food, the cake, the music, surrounded by our family and friends…it was perfect. We are continuing this fairytale in Wisconsin! Children are definitely in our future but we want to continue our adventure with just the two of us for a few more years.

“We both knew that this was something special.”
